Introduction

The Department of Computer Science was founded in 1981, admitted undergraduate students in a single class, under the College of Management, then the College of Science in 1982, and joined the College of Engineering in 2007. In 1986, the recruit of students was increased to two classes, with a total of 120 students admitted each year. The Master Program was started in 1998, recruiting 25 graduate students every academic year. The department started the In-service Master Program in 2000, and recruited about 30 students every academic year. In 2002, the department started Extension School of bachelor program, recruiting 60 students every academic year. The department recruits 180 students every year nowadays. As one of the core departments of TungHai University, the department consists of about 700 students in total, and there are more than 5,200 graduate students during the past 42 academic years. IT talents trained by the department are widely and highly appreciated at home and abroad by academia and industrial circles, and the graduates perform well in the job market and play important roles. Currently, both undergraduate and graduate programs in our department are IEET (Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan) accredited. IEET accreditation is issued to accredited educational institutions by IEET, a non-profit and non-government organization. IEET is a member of Washington Accord, Seoul Accord, and NABEEA.  As a result, being an IEET certificated institution, the degrees issued by our department is recognized in many countries.

Regarding to the intact structured teaching faculty, there are 19 full-time teachers now, including 7 professors, 5 associate professors, and 7 assistant professors. The full-time faculty of the department have a wealth of professional and practical experience so that they can fulfill their fundamental duties of teaching, research, service and consultation. The teachers’ expertise of the department can cover the evolving field of Computer Science, such as AI, software engineering, information security, network and multimedia, embedded systems, and in accordance with the vivid and various development of computer science, research groups are formed. Three undergraduate core categories, i.e. Software Engineering, Information and Computer Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, are designed for undergraduate students. The department also encourages students to pursue further studies abroad, and to provide resources for applications and assistance, with the aim to not only expand learning experiences of students, but also instill international perspectives in them. For our Master programs, we aim at training a group of professional computer engineers to teach or conduct researches in the future.
